Stop and Ask

In theory, this one should be pretty easy.  Simply Stop and Ask yourself "What Matters?!" and whether you're living it.  It's an easy way to check in with yourself to see how your life is going.  If you don't like what you find, use the other What Matters?! practices to make meaningful change.  Try Stopping and Asking once a day.  Too busy you say? How about once a week?  Still too much?  How about once a month?  Every six months?  Okay, we'll settle for once a year! Five minutes. You can't can't take 5 minutes to Stop and Ask What Matters?!?  Red Alert!  Make the time, it's only your life we are talking about!  By stopping and asking What Matters?! you will be assessing every decision point with a grand scheme in mind and quickly realize how much DOESN'T matter!

Reach In

Reach In is about taking an active role in ensuring the well being of your mind, spirit, and body.  Nurturing all three of these components of self is critical to living What Matters?!  Take mind for example.  Though it believes it is working in your best interests, left unchecked it can unintentionally hijack you into a sea of worry doubt, self judgment and a host of other negative thinking.  The key is to find the personalized tools and practices that work to keep your mind as an ally, rather than allowing it to spiral into an enemy.  You don't have to be a "spiritual person" to nurture your spirit (call it "heart" if you want).  Ignoring this aspect of yourself can flatline you emotionally.  Sing, dance, walk in nature, play with the dog, listen to music…find whatever it takes to bring you renewal and do it.  Then, there's body.  How much sleep are you getting?  What kind of foods are you eating?  Are you getting the proper amount of exercise?  You don't have to be a triathlete (unless that's What Matters?! to you).  Just take Reach In and take care of yourself!

Reach Out

There's a whole world out there to support you.  All you need to do is ask.  And, for many, asking for help is considered a sign of weakness.  But that just doesn't make any sense.  Why is it ok for a quarterback to have a bench full of help and for some reason we have been conditioned into thinking we have to figure it all out and go it alone?  The Reach Out practice is all about identifying and engaging people in your life who will help you to live "What Matters?!" It can be as simple as calling a friend when you are feeling stressed. And there are so many other options as well…Find a mentor.  Hire a coach.  Get a therapist.  Talk to your minster, priest, rabbi, imam/mullah, hairdresser, yogi…whomever!  Be an octopus not a turtle!  Reach Out!

Plan

Living What Matters?! takes planning.  While you can't possibly anticipate everything you'll encounter in a given day, you can either react to events as they come at you (and throw the dice that you'll live What Matters?!) or you can think ahead about how you will choose to spend your time.  What will you say "yes" to?  What will you say "no" to?  Planning is all about taking the opportunity to identify the activities that you'll need to engage in to move you in the direction of living What Matters?! Abraham Lincoln reportedly once said, "If I had 60 minutes to cut down a tree, I would spend 40 minutes sharpening the ax and 20 minutes cutting it down."  Take the time to sharpen your What Matters?! ax.

Act

To live What Matters?! requires that you take action. Holding back while you wait for the perfect moment, the perfect words, or the perfect outfit will not work.   Sure, you may fail.  However, wouldn't you rather risk failure than not pursue What Matters?! to you?  Your actions do not have to be big.  Your actions don't have to be perfect.  The important thing is that you intentionally choose to do something and then do it.  Use what you learn from the experience to inform what you do next.  After a while you'll come closer and closer to hitting the bulls eye.  Professional hockey player Wayne Gretzky once said, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."  Take your best shot at living What Matters?!  No one else can do it for you.

Yikes! You may not be living your life, at least right now, in accordance with what matters most to you. Please strip away any self-judgment you may have, (it's amazingly easy to beat ourselves up when we get a low score in ANYTHING), and see this as a great opportunity to make changes that are meaningful and useful to you.  A good move might be to check out the Ask What Matters?! tool . It's designed to help you gain clarity about what is most important to you and the choices that will let you live the way you really want to.

You're finding your way. You want to live your life according to what matters most to you, but may be having trouble making it real day-to-day.  Consider this: How can you reliably identify those things that bring you joy and those that add to your suffering? AND, how can you say a resounding YES to the joy-builders and a polite NO to the suffering-inducers? Different people find different tools most helpful, so we suggest you take a look at two: the What Matters?! Wheel of Life will help you gauge how you're doing in different aspects of your life; the Weights and Buoys worksheet will give you a clear look at exactly which people, places, things, or experiences are raising you up, and which are bringing you down.
